Three things

Haven’t posted here for awhile, so I’ll steal a text-meme from Meagan.

THREE NAMES YOU GO BY

  1. Mike.
  2. Mike G.
  3. Mikey (That’s what the family calls me. When I became a teenager I got annoyed with it; now it doesn’t bother me.).

THREE SCREEN NAMES YOU HAVE HAD

  1. molvik (my old IRC nick… an old Henrik Ibsen-based routine with my friend Brittany that would take way too long to explain)
  2. mikegwsu
  3. mikegunh (predictable, I know… but I don’t like “clever” usernames)

THREE THINGS YOU LIKE ABOUT YOURSELF

  1. I’m psychologically balanced.
  2. I’m easy to get along with (I think).
  3. I have a healthy attitude toward money—not a spendthrift, not a miser.

THREE THINGS YOU DON’T LIKE ABOUT YOURSELF

  1. My inability to play a musical instrument.
  2. Poor memory.
  3. SLEEP and lack of it. Yeah, that whole thing. Don’t get me started.

THREE PARTS OF YOUR HERITAGE

  1. Mexican.
  2. German.
  3. Unknown (This is true. Much of my mom’s ancestry is virtually untraceable.) .

THREE THINGS THAT SCARE YOU

  1. Heights.
  2. An anti-gravity feel in general (can’t stand roller coasters with loops or sudden drops on a commercial flight).
  3. Uh… I don’t know. Giant spiders, I guess? Or maybe bees.

THREE OF YOUR EVERYDAY ESSENTIALS

  1. Music on the car stereo.
  2. Something to read aimlessly.
  3. Soap. Or at least something to clean my oily face with.

THREE THINGS YOU ARE WEARING RIGHT NOW

  1. T-shirt.
  2. Boxer shorts.
  3. Uh, glasses (What can I say? I’ve got the heat on.).

THREE OF YOUR FAVORITE BANDS (or artists)

  1. Catherine Wheel / Rob Dickinson.
  2. Massive Attack.
  3. Afghan Whigs / Twilight Singers / Amber Headlights / Gutter Twins / whatever Greg Dulli is calling himself right now.

THREE OF YOUR FAVORITE SONGS AT PRESENT

  1. “The Girls from the Streets” by Scott Walker.
  2. “Why Don’t You Take Me” by One Dove.
  3. “Almost Forgot Myself” by Doves (Hmm… two dove-related songs.).

THREE NEW THINGS YOU WANT TO TRY IN THE NEXT 12 MONTHS

  1. A full-day walk down the Oregon coast, 15 miles at least. The most I’ve done is about seven.
  2. Going through the academic publishing process.
  3. Getting into shape for the first time in, like, years.

TWO TRUTHS AND A LIE (spoiler at the bottom of this post)

  1. I’ve met Gwen Stefani.
  2. I’ve met Billy Bob Thornton.
  3. I’ve met Alan Alda.

THREE THINGS YOU JUST CAN’T DO

  1. Believe that all points of view are equally valid.
  2. Swim.
  3. Play drums or do anything else that requires independent movement of at least three parts of my body. Well, on second thought, I haven’t exhaustively tested that theory.

THREE OF YOUR FAVORITE PASTIMES

  1. Going to concerts (Especially highly-anticipated ones.).
  2. Walking around in the Great Outdoors.
  3. Hanging out with my closest friends (Regular friends are great, but closest friends? There’s nothing better.).

THREE THINGS YOU WANT TO DO REALLY BADLY RIGHT NOW

  1. Get the new desktop I ordered from Hewlett-Packard.
  2. Build up some momentum so I can respond to a bunch of student Blackboard posts.
  3. Take a shower (I’m waiting for the guy next door to turn his off.)

THREE CAREERS YOU’RE CONSIDERING

  1. Teacher / scholar / admininistrator / academic dude.
  2. Website guy, I guess, if the academic thing imploded somehow.
  3. Rock star.

THREE PLACES YOU WANT TO GO ON VACATION

  1. West Coast.
  2. Rocky Mountains.
  3. Yurrop.

THREE KIDS’ NAMES (that you like or know)

  1. Edward.
  2. James.
  3. Olmos.

THREE THINGS YOU WANT TO DO BEFORE YOU DIE

  1. Have a small family for a change.
  2. Pay off debts.
  3. Have a nice, long, unusual academic career.

THREE RECENTLY READ BOOKS

  1. The Death and Life of Great American Cities by Jane Jacobs
  2. Criminals: Let ‘Em Fry, Boil and Saute (my aunt’s self-published prison cookbook)
  3. Interface Culture: How New Technology Transforms the Way we Create and Communicate by Steven Johnson

THREE THINGS YOU’RE GOING TO DO THIS WEEKEND

  1. Respond to student Blackboard posts (as mentioned above).
  2. Superb Owl.
  3. Work on the ol’ PhD exam reading list.

TWO TRUTHS AND A LIE spoiler: 1 and 3 are true. I didn’t meet Billy Bob; I only saw him shake the hands of people around me. It was at the premiere of The Alamo in San Antonio, which just happened to coincide with the 4Cs conference.
